Learn about: • Taking a history • Building trust with a patient • The difference between primary and secondary assessment • How to select the correct assessment tool • Anatomy and physiology in relation to a wide range of systems, including common or serious presentations • Stepping up your clinical reasoning skills • Numerous case studies to highlight key findings, as well as commonly missed signs and symptoms Need for Program A fundamental aspect of nursing care is the ability to conduct a comprehensive patient assessment and interpret and act on the relevant findings. New techniques and evidence are always emerging, which will impact on assessment knowledge and skills that already exist. Closing the gap between what is already known and any new aspects of assessment is necessary if critical thinking is to be maintained at a high level. Purpose of Program The purpose of this seminar is to offer all nurses an opportunity to update their general clinical assessment skills. Objectives Topics • Improve patient comfort during an assessment by preparing the person physically and psychosocially, including through selecting the most appropriate assessment tool • Confidently take a meaningful patient history in accordance with best practice so as to extract the relevant knowledge within the context of the person’s condition • Correlate clinical assessment findings with the pathophysiological processes that occur across a range of body systems • Document findings and apply a range of appropriate and timely evidence-based nursing interventions
